Not only is it a human rights crisis for the Indigenous communities living in Alberta and British Columbia, but an environmental disaster. A new extension to a current pipeline has been proposed to carry oil, all the way to Texas, putting some of North America’s most fragile ecosystems and waterways in at risk. Bill McKibben and his team at 350.org helped spearhead a movement called Tar Sands Action, enlisting the help of people all over the US and Canada willing to express their dismay and anger about this possible new pipeline. Ever wondered what goes on in one of Nunavut’s Arctic college learning centres? While many people are aware that Nunavut’s Arctic College was set up to provide education and vocational opportunities for those living in Canada’s eastern Arctic, many are unaware that outside the major campuses, in places like Iqaluit, there’s Arctic College learning centres in many of Nunavut’s smaller communities. There, programs can range from cooking, for those keen on a job as a cook at the local hotel, to traditional skills, for those wanting to keep Inuit traditions alive. When Eye on the Arctic travelled to Qikiqtarjuaq, a predominantly Inuit community of around 500 people, the centre’s traditional sewing program was in full swing. In this video, the centre’s adult educator Lizzie Aliqatuqtuq was kind enough to show us around and share her thoughts on what makes Arctic College’s learning centres so important and unique. Across the Canadian Arctic, local nurses are in great demand. The majority of the nursing force is still made up of recruits from the South who rotate in and out of Canada’s remote Arctic regions. Many feel this revolving door can only be stopped by increasing the number of Aboriginal and Inuit health care workers who understand northern culture and languages. But despite this great need, there are still only a handful of such nurses practising in the various Arctic regions. Eye on the Arctic’s Eilís Quinn sat down with Minnie Akparook, an Inuk nurse from Nunavik, Canada, about the obstacles she overcame to start her career and the health challenges facing Canada’s Inuit population today.
