Cherchant à valoriser la participation citoyenne, Radio Canada International a lancé en 2010 le Concours Racines, ouvert aux réalisateurs amateurs, professionnels et semi-professionnels canadiens de toutes origines. Le concours Racines a produit près de 150 films dont 70 en français, lesquels ont été soumis à l’approbation du jury et du public. Près de 5 000 internautes de 25 pays ont voté pour les trois Prix du public décernés aux cinéastes canadiens lors de la compétition en ligne. Le projet Racines s’est mérité le prix Salut aux Talents, dans la catégorie Valeurs publiques décerné par la radio-télévision de Radio-Canada.

To stimulate citizen participation, Radio Canada International’s Special Projects Team launched in 2010, The Roots Challenge, a national short films and multimedia competition inviting Canadian filmmakers to submit 3-8 minute films. This competition aimed to show the contribution of all cultures to the Canadian mosaic. ‘Roots’ is a reflection of what makes Canada what it is today. Over 150 films were submitted of which close to 60 were chosen for the competition and submitted to the jury and to the public via the on-line competition. More than 5,000 people from 25 countries voted for the three Popular Vote Choice prizes. The Roots Challenge was awarded the Salut aux Talents trophy in the Public Valour category given out by Radio-Canada.

Le réflexe d’un nouvel arrivant est de se tourner vers les immigrants issus de sa communauté d’origine, ce qui aide à minimiser les chocs culturels. Toutefois, ce réflexe comporte aussi des inconvénients : regard biaisé sur la société d’accueil, généralisation de situations anecdotiques et repli sur soi.

Radio Canada International invited filmmakers, 18 years and older, from around the world to enter their short films in the Digital Diversity competition. It opened in the Spring of 2007 and asked Canadians between the ages of 18 and 35 to submit short films or podcasts on the theme of immigration and cultural diversity. Over 200 films were submitted to the English jury which was composed of Mitra Sen, Sunny Yi, Ruba Nadda, and Alden Habacon. Short films and podcast finalists have been viewed and heard more than 60,000 times, and more than 6,000 comments have been posted on our website.

Près de 200 films ont été soumis au jury de Radio Canada International dans les deux langues officielles du pays soit 100 films dans chaque langue. The Arrival
Arrival to a new and strange land... Canada!

They are young. They belong to diverse ethnic minorities, living in multicultural spaces. Daily, they speak more than one language. Perhaps they don’t intend to change the world but nevertheless, given their choices and the way they’ve decided to live their lives, they are changing their surroundings thus shaping anew the mentalities of those around them. Their stories reflect diverse journeys taken by these young people. The result is the construction of a new form of citizenship in a multicultural world. Such is the life in the Asia-Pacific countries and in Canada. A nine episode series produced by Radio Canada International, the Thomson Foundation and the AIBD.

Mustafa, born in the USA, moved to Indonesia with his family a little more than a decade ago. Today, as the composer and lead vocalist of the band ’Debu’, he’s a popular figure in Indonesia. His songs carry religious and spiritual messages, but what interests this talented musician most of all is diversity.

Oliver Joseph aka DJ Billy is a Filipino disc jockey working at an island resort in the Maldives. He finds that even though his work does not bring him into direct contact with people, he has to understand their culture and provide the right musical cues to get them onto the dance floor.

Cowa Fak Hey, a Malaysian Chinese settled in Sri Lanka, runs a popular Chinese restaurant. Despite the difficulties of language and the differences of culture, every day in his life illustrates the beauty of diversity.

Joko Suriyanto found himself missing his family intensely when he moved from Indonesia to Malaysia to work as an IT professional. But he soon learnt to overcome his loneliness and utilize his spare time to pick up additional skills that will stand him in good stead.

Catherine traveled from the USA to Bangladesh as a young woman fresh out of college, hoping to undertake academic research. Her arrival was the beginning of a new life - not only did she marry a local man and find a new career as a film maker, she finds herself entirely at home in a new culture.

The Mandarin Teacher
Su Juan came from a small Chinese city to Jakarta to teach Mandarin in a local school and found herself in a mélange of ethnicities and cultures. A non-believer, she was at first confounded by the multiplicity of religions in Indonesia, but soon found that she was able to adjust well in her new home.
